Well, a week ago, shortly after I added dirt to the cage, I found the lifeless corpse of our tarantula and good friend Aspen, sitting alone by the trilobite. I believe she died because of stress from her molt. As I mentioned earlier, her hole collapsed in on her while she was molting. She was okay for awhile after I dug her up, but I think the stress was just too much for our little friend. I'm looking for supplies to set up a small memorial in her name. Once it's done I'll post up a picture of it. In memory of Aspen the Costan Rican Zebra Tarantula. We barely knew ye.

Aspen's dead?! *sob* The Aspen and Machiko needs a new costar. Like... A long lost cousin that happens to be called Aspen the second.

or maybe Machiko's child will be named such.
I just don't have the heart to change the name to "The Adventures of Machiko".

So, Machiko has taken refuge under the log (my mom dug her tunnel under the waterdish up because she was worried she was dead) and has made a really cool cavern of webs and webbed dirt under there. Unfortunately this means I don't get to see her often because I hate lifting up the log and destroying her webs. But when I did lift it (last night) I found that she has molted recently ! Yay Machiko! I was so proud of her. Sorry, no pics, I'll take some if I lift the log again or if she comes out for a stroll sometime. Also, I still haven't gotten around to making a memorial for Aspen. I tried to make it out of sticks but it broke. I'm going to have to buy a little cross, if I can find one. EDIT: Strangely enough, I've noticed that the dirt level in the cage is lowering. I think it's just compressing over time but it looks like it did when I put the first bag of dirt in there. Strange.

Yay for Machiko! Perhaps she eats dirt...

But then wouldn't see poop it out and the dirt level would stay the same?

I regret to inform you all that Machiko has perished. She is now joining Aspen in that big spiderweb in eternity. I believe her death was a result of the new light I put in her cage. It wasn't infared (they were out of stock in the pet store) and very bright an intense. I think it was too much for her so recently after her molt.
I've learned a valuable lesson from this experience.
Leave spiderling handling to the experts. They are too young and fragile to take care of. If I ever get another tarantula, I will get it fully grown.
