Outcasts Among Outlaws
By: A. E. Sallow (Penname)
I fell to my knees as I succumbed to my wounds; the blood was dripping off nose on to the icy landscape. The wind stirred snow as I got to my feet and slowly brought my knife up. I staggered forward, somehow managing to keep my battered body stable enough to walk. "Lierra, what have you done?" I asked, my voice low and gravely.
"Nothing. Well, not compared to what you have done. I mean, I'm not the on who destroyed the entire 5th troop," a tall woman with brown hair styled the same way as mine back then, all down her back. She turned her cruel blue eyes to me. "Lou, my friend, we've known each other for... how long?" Lierra asked, walking to me in a quick pace, my own wounds pulling me down to the floor.
"500 years...." I replied, my knees giving way and I was on them, looking up to that tall devil... "Since the day I was spawned of my mother father. You've been there, deceiving, lying..."
"Lou, Lou, Lou. What have you learned? Respect your elders," she ordered, raising her hand to call upon the forces that be. I winced as I expected an ice enchantment that would freeze me until Hell is likewise. I looked up as I heard a mumble. "Kintle..." she said, gazing into the face of the only remaining member of the 5th.
"She's mine," Kin said, his green eyes turning icy in hate. He grabbed my collar and hoisted me up to meet his. "You've killed your own troops, Major. You thought you got us all, to hide your own mistake," he said, his shaggy black hair was being messed up in the chilling wind.
"Sergeant..." I said, tears welling up in my eyes and slowly spilling out. They froze on my cheeks and felt like an iron pressing on my flesh. "It wasn't me...." I said, tears silently spilling and freezing.
"It wasn't you?! It wasn't you?!" Kin said, shaking me hard, my feet dangling below me. "I saw you, the entire army saw you! You called up the very fires of Hell to exterminate them!"
"It wasn't me..." I said, getting thrown to the floor. "I swear...”
"Quit. Saying that!" he yelled. His temples were throbbing and his eyes ablaze. He threw me on the ground my dress tearing and my leg getting cut badly from an ice shard, convience placed on my fall.
"Whoops, I missed," Lierra said, groaning and then smiling as the ice started swelling up from under me.
"Lierra! Sister! Listen to my pleas!" I said, my leg paining me as I got up. I panted then screamed as an ice spike quickly welled up under my foot, going straight through it. I pulled it up, my breath coming in short, shallow bursts. I barely got to my feet when I was hit over the head with the flat side of a broadsword. I feel, impaling my shoulder on my own blade I had dropped before this started. I laid there, my blade sticking up and my body going numb. "Is this it? Am I going to be killed by my own troop? My own sister?" I was barely speaking; my voice was going with my blood, my strength. I continued, barely even thinking. "My most loyal has turned to my closest.... Should I have seen this coming," I told them, tears falling slowly. "You were the only things I hav- had. You know what happened in the last war..." I smiled sadly at the thought of it. My tears frozen on my cheeks as my body gave away.
I awoke to the sound of a voice. "Domina! Domina!" a voice called in Latin, shaking my unhurt shoulder slightly. My eyes snapped open.
"Quid?" I responded, hoping they understood. I saw red all around me. "Where does one go after they are already dead?" I asked myself.
"Domina, we do not know. Nor shall you," the voice responded, pulling me off the ice. I looked at his face an smiled.
"Why aren't you dead?" I asked calmly, knowing him to be in my troop that was all killed by... me.
"That's a story meant for another time- when our favorite Major is dying," Sid answered, carrying me and making sure my blood had stopped flowing.
"Where are the others?" I asked, knowing him to be the first in my slaughter.
"A hideout.... the ones that survived. Out of the 200 you had, only 5 remain, three are still in a coma of sorts," he said, walking slowly as to not disturb my wounds.
"Who's all here? And how did you know that it wasn't me who killed... them?" I asked, seeing the cave in an outcropping of rocks.
"I'll tell you later, but for now..." and that's all I can remember. It's hard to remember things when you are half dead...
An icy mist was covering the land while I entered the outcropping with Sid. "Sid?" I asked, being set down with warm smiles all around me. "You never carried me," I said to make that clear.
"Yes, Domina," she said, his crooked smile growing ever larger as he backed away and sat next to a short, white haired warrior. "Kouen, she's back," I managed to hear as he told the sleeping 'demon'.
"DOMINA!" she yelled hopping up and running to my side. I stopped her before she did anything else.
"Stop. Sit," I ordered, turning my head from my deerskin mat on the floor. "Why do you all not despise me?" I queried, lip quivering and eyes filling. "I killed your comrades!" I was crying with these words. I love them like my own family...
"We heard you speeches, your words were our inspiration. 'We will fight as one! The scourge of the mighty empire will fall before our hands. We are the demons, the rebels, the terrorists and the fools! They are the evil empire that is trying to control all of our thoughts, out plans, our hopes and dreams! Whose side do you want to be on? I myself think that the rebels, will have more fun.'" Kouen retold, oddly having it memorized.
“Kouen, you can’t remember most of your name, but you can remember her first speech?” Cid asked with his voice hiding a laugh and going around checking on the others.
“Cid, cut your hair. It’s too long and with what we’re doing, it’ll get in the way,” I ordered from my mat. He looked back at his shoulder length black hair and bit his lip. “Do it!” I said, wincing at the pain in my shoulder and getting a worried look from Kouen.
