Cercia’s Seven: The Beginning
Nami stood on the sidewalk in the cool wind of the afternoon. On the other side, people in black clad uniforms were racing down the sidewalk and around the corner. Seconds later, she heard a bang, and a greenish haze billowed into the air. A box flew out of the gas and landed at her feet. No bigger than her hand, it was addressed to her. Nami opened it. Inside there was a small heart-shaped pendant, no bigger than her thumb. Who knew this was the object that would start a massive chain of events?
Chapter 1: The New Guy
A fourteen year-old girl was sitting on the porch steps of her house. She had chest-length chestnut-colored hair with a tinge of red at the ends and had bright hazel eyes. Nami looked at her watch. It read 8:00 A.M. School started in five minutes, and she had at least ten blocks to go. Nami stood up and walked out the gate of her house and down the sidewalk. She knew that taking the pendant to school was a bad idea, but she might loose it if she didn’t. After a few seconds, Nami reached the end of the first block, but she didn’t notice. She just kept on walking, heedless of the traffic lights. Suddenly, a speeding car rushed towards her. The driver honked his horn twice, but couldn’t stop. Nami jumped in the air and was on the other side of the street.
The next few seconds rushed by. One minute the car was there, and then she was in the air and on the other side of the street. Nami guessed she was just imagining things and kept on walking.
Three minutes later Nami was in front of her school. She looked at her watch. 8:04. only a minute until the bell rang. Nami ran up the stairs and through the school doors. People were still in the hallway. She ignored them and ran to her classroom, then opened the door.
The classroom was a madhouse. People were sitting in the wrong seats, paper airplanes were flying in the air, and a few kids had even made a slingshot and started to hit people with broken pencils and erasers. This didn’t surprise Nami. The classroom was always like this before the bell.
The floor was littered with scrap paper, broken pencils, chalk, and old homework assignments. It was amazing how no one had slipped on them. Nami sighed and sat in a desk in the middle of the classroom, the only place that hadn’t been attacked by paperclips. A girl with short brown hair walked over to her.

“So, did you find anything out about the pendant yet?” Diana asked. As Nami’s best friend, it seemed to be her duty to help her with just about anything. It was good to have her as a friend, because she was just your average computer whiz, who could find everything on the Internet.
“No dice. I just can’t figure out what use the thing has other than being a necklace.” Nami said. “I’m surprised I didn’t drill a hole in it yet.”
“Let’s talk later, the teacher’s coming!” Diana whispered, and sat up as straight as possible. The bell rang and the teacher walked in. Everyone immediately took their seat. The paper and trash seemed to magically disappear.
It was then that Nami realized there was a boy leaning against the wall in a shadowed part of the room. He was good looking and had dark black hair that was just long enough to tie in the back and fell into his eyes with a laid-back elegance. His school tie was done properly, but he looked as if he would never have worn it. The teacher walked over to him and seemed to drag him to the front of the class.
“This is Scott Ahn; He has transferred here and will be given a warm welcome.” The teacher said, staring hard at Nami. Nami had a habit of teasing newcomers, and this seemed to be one person she couldn’t resist humiliating.
“I will give you the choice of sitting next to Nami, or not sitting next to Nami.” The teacher said. Several people snickered. “I strongly advise you against sitting next to her unless you wand to be considered the class clown.”
“I think I’ll be considered the class clown.” Scott said, trying not to look at Nami as he walked to the desk next to her. To Nami’s displeasure, he resisted all attempts to go nuts when she sang ‘Old McDonald had a Farm’ and the alphabet under her breath five times, mimicked his actions for half of the class period, tapped her pencil whenever the teacher spoke, and tripped him over four times on the way to sharpen a pencil.

When class ended, Nami walked out with Diana extremely frustrated.
“It’s like he knows everything I’m about to do.” Nami said. “It’s either he enjoys it, or he’s deaf, blind, and numb to any contact to the ankle.”
As Nami walked out of the hallway, her pendant fell out of her pocket. Nami and Diana walked to a gap between two tall oak trees in the corner of the schoolyard.
“So, did you find anything out?” Nami asked Diana.
“Yeah, but only a little. I tried the computer’s search engine, and it said that the pendant has powers, but only one person can use it properly.”
“Anything else?”
“There is also some company that’s after the pendant. I just-“
“Hey, I think this belongs to you.” A voice said. Nami turned around and saw Scott holding the pendant.
“Thanks. I didn’t even notice that it was gone.” Nami said, taking the pendant from his hand.
“If you like, you can come over to my place after school.” Scott said. It was surprising and scary how smooth Scott was even though he barely knew her.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Nami said, eager to here the rest of Diana’s lecture.
“Are you sure?” Scott said.
“Yeah, now I really have to talk to Diana, so if you don’t mind, would you please go right now?” Nami said. Scott shrugged and left. “Wait, what did he just say?” Nami asked.
Diana slapped her head with a fist. “You just said yes to going over to his house after school.” She said, groaning. “Good luck pulling this off.”
After school, Nami met Scott at the school gate. She started to walk down the sidewalk.
“Your house isn’t far, is it?” Nami asked.
“Nah, it’s only a few blocks away.” Scott said. “I’ve got this great part of the house that I found. Your pendant reminded me of it.”
A few minutes later they were at the front of Scott’s house. It was more like a mini-mansion though.
“Okay, enough goggling at the front. Follow me.” Scott said, leading her to the back gate.
He stopped at a large maple tree. The leaves were so big and numerous that it seemed impossible for a tree that size to have branches that held up those leaves. A small and almost unnoticeable vine was hanging from the lowest branch.

“Pull it.” Scott said. Nami gave it one hearty tug, and a rope ladder unraveled. Nami climbed up. When she got to the top, she couldn’t believe her eyes.
It was a treehouse gone paranoid. There were at least thirty square feet of space inside. There were six computers, six beds, six equipment belts, six lethal-looking handguns, six couches, six chairs at a dining table, and six televisions, six of about everything needed to live. Scott was standing by a small column in the center of the treehouse. On top of the column was a glass case with four pendants inside. Each one had a picture above it. There seemed to be a hook and a picture right beside the fourth pendant. That meant a pendant was missing. The pendants seemed to represent the elements water, wind, earth, and thunder. The fifth seemed to be three elements in one. Fire, darkness, and something else. It was then that Nami realized something. Water, wind, earth, and thunder. Blue, silver, green, and gold. The last was pink.

Chapter 2: Power Unleashed
“The thing I can’t figure out is that the fifth pendant is missing.” Scott said. “I think the fifth pendant is yours.”
“We can’t be sure of that unless we have proof.” Nami said, trying to sound unsure. Actually, Nami knew the fifth pendant was hers. She opened the glass case. A slip of paper fell out. Scott’s back was turned to her, so Nami picked it up and shoved it in her pocket as fast as she could.
“Sorry, I have to go now.” Nami said. “I…uh…just remembered that I have something I need to take care of. Gotta go!” And with that, Nami climbed down the ladder and ran out of the back gate and down the sidewalk. She kept running until she got to a dark alleyway, where she took out the slip of paper.
To: N.S.D.J.H. Throw it above your head And it will happen.
Nami took out the pendant, hesitated, then threw the pendant over her head and closed her eyes. She experienced the strangest feeling. Something cold and hard formed in her hands. It felt like a pole. Nami opened her eyes to find that she was in a pink and black orb. Black gloves formed on her hands. She was wearing a long dress with long black boots. A pair of black dragonish wings formed on her head and a pair of black cat ears formed on her head. The cold hard think was a black staff with a pink ball at the top and strange markings down the side. In her other hand a black dagger with a pink jewel encrusted in the center had formed. The pendant was replaced as a necklace for the finishing touch.
“Wow.”

Chapter 3: Consequences
Nami flapped her wings and soared high into the air. She felt as it all of her worries were washed away. It was like walking on air. The wind blew in her face as she swooped above the trees closest to her. Nami landed lightly on her feet.
“That was fun, but I think I might attract too much attention if I go around looking like this.” Nami thought. “I have to change back.” Nami turned over the slip of paper. “It says to yank of the pendant.” She said aloud. “That’s easy!”
Nami pulled off the pendant and in an instant, she was back to normal. She ran down the sidewalk.
“I have to tell this to Diana.”
The next day, Nami walked into the school entrance and saw Diana. She had a newspaper article in her hand, which was unusual for her. But then again, everyone else in the schoolyard did.
“Now let’s see here.” Diana said. “Five foot two, chest length hair, has a mysterious pendant with unknown powers. Yep, she’s my girl.”
“What are you talking about?” Nami said. Diana brushed a newspaper article in front of her. The front page was covered in photos.
“Angel sighted: At 6:38 P.M., seven people from different locations witnessed a teenage girl with wings gliding over 14th Street. These are photos of the mystery girl the witnesses took.” Nami read aloud.
“So, who is this mystery girl? She looks a lot like you.” Diana said. Nami motioned for Diana to follow her behind the school.
Nami took out the pendant. “It’s me. This is how I was able to fly.” Nami said, holding the pendant up. “I also have some information.” Nami took out the slip of paper from the glass case and gave it to Diana.
“Where did you get this information? This is great! I could do a DNA recognition scan and look this stuff up on the web!” Diana said, reading the slip of paper. “Let me guess, you followed the directions. But I don’t know what N.S.D.J.H. stands for. I’ll have to look it up.”

“Great, now I really have to get going.” Nami said hurriedly. “We’re going to be late for class. I’ll talk to you later.”
Nami walked out from the back of the school. At closer observation, everyone was either holing a newspaper, yearbook, or both. A lot of boys were comparing the pictures with some of the girls. The bell rang, and everyone slowly started to walk into the school building. Nami walked in a little nervous.
“It’s not like anyone’s going to notice.” Nami thought. “But if they do, I’ll be totally busted, plus I’ll be stared at for the rest of my life and known as the girl with the wings.”
Nami wasn’t paying attention to where she was going and bumped into someone.
“Hey, watch where you’re going!” A voice said. Nami looked up and saw a teenage boy staring at her.
“Hawk, I don’t have time for this.” Nami said, shoving him away from her. Hawk had ghostly white skin and silvery white hair with a tinge of black at the ends, making his face seem even whiter. He was the snobbiest, richest, and most arrogant boy in school.
“Hey Nami!” Scott caught up to her in the hallway. “I’ve wanted to talk to you. Wasn’t that your picture in the-“
Nami immediately put a hand over his mouth. “Don’t say a word about this in public.” Nami whispered. She shoved him into an empty classroom. “Shut your face until you get all of the facts from me or Diana. You got it?” Nami said, and walked out the door.
“Geez, what’s wrong with her?”
Nami entered the classroom to find that everyone was either talking about the newspaper article or reading it. No one had notice that Nami had come in. “I just hope no one figures out who I am.” Nami thought.
“I knew it was her! After all, she fits the profile and for some reason, she’s extra jumpy today.” Someone said behind her. Nami turned around and saw Scott.

“What a loudmouth you are.” Nami muttered. “It’s also no help that Diana’s talking to him. At this rate, I’ll be on the news by tomorrow night.”
At lunch, Nami must have collided with Hawk a million times, and every time he got more irritating and annoying. For some reason, he seemed to be everywhere, but it was probably the fact that Nami was walking with her head down. It also didn’t help that a group of the most aggravating girls were always following him around and were making unnecessary comments. They were his ‘fan club’, and would adore him far his money and aristocratic behavior.
“This is the last time you interfere with what I’m trying to do!” Hawk yelled. Nami had once again run into him.
“What exactly are you trying to do?” Nami said. “Count how many times you can bump into me in one day?”
Hawk pushed her backwards with such force that Nami would have gone careening down the gate if someone hadn’t caught her. Luckily, someone did catch her. A brown-haired boy holing a soccer ball grabbed her and hoisted her up to her feet.
“You okay Nami?” he said. He stopped the game for a minute.
“I’m fine.” Nami said, brushing her skirt. “Thanks James. No thanks to bird brains over there.” Nami pointed at Hawk, who was now sitting under a tree on the other side of the schoolyard.
“Didn’t he do this last week?” James said. Nami nodded her head. “I warned him…I’ll be right back.”
Nami watched him postpone the game and run over to the other side of the schoolyard. This was going to be a little messy. On the bright side, Hawk was being pounded into a pulp. She turned around and walked off to the spot between the two oak trees.
“Who is that?” A voice said behind her. Nami jumped a foot in the air and looked behind her. Scott poked his head out from the space between the trees.
“That’s only James. He’s one of my friends.” Nami said, breathing deeply.
“I don’t like him.” Scott said, scowling at him darkly. “At least he plays the role of the broom when you’re getting beat up.”

Chapter 4: A Lot of Things Can Go Wrong
Winter came, and it started to snow. But that also meant one other thing.
Nami walked into the school gate, shivering.
“Why do I always forget one thing? Yesterday it was a homework assignment, and now I’ve forgotten to bring my jacket to school, and by the time the bell rings, I’m going to be the living snowman.” Nami thought as she sat down on a pile of snow.
“Nami, where’s your jacket?” someone said. James took off his jacket and draped it around her shoulders. “You want to be an ice sculpture, or do you want to be shoved into a cryogenic pod to be unfrozen three months from now? You can borrow this for the day.”
“Thanks, but what about you? I can’t stand more than five minutes in the snow without a jacket or sweater.” Nami said.
“No problem. My mom knows I’ll let someone borrow my jacket, so she made me pack a spare.” James said cheerfully, taking out a black sweater from his backpack. “Well, I have to tell the soccer team that practice is canceled until the snow melts, so I’ll see you later.”
“Hi person.” Scott trudged up the sidewalk and in the school gate. “Listen, the winter dance is coming up, right?”
“Yeah, but I don’t care about something that’s a month away.” Nami said. “I’ve got to-“
“Do you wanna go with me?” Scott suddenly blurted out.
“What?”
“Well, I mean, do you want to go with me to the dance?” Scott said. He seemed a lot less smooth than he was before.
“Since when would a playboy want to go with me?” Nami said sarcastically. Scott seemed to take that the wrong way.
“It’s the only place that we can talk about your pendant and junk like that.” Scott said. “Besides, my homeroom teacher gave out free tickets, and I already bought one, so I don’t want to waste it.”
“Can’t you go with Diana?”
“I’ll start to say stuff that I shouldn’t say if I go with her. You don’t want to be on the front page of the newspaper again, do you?” Scott said.
“Okay, but only because of our little discussion.” Nami said.
“I gotta go and get my binder back from my math teacher, so see ya.” He said. He slouched off.

“Damn, why the lame excuse? That just ruined it!” Nami heard him mutter. She took a fistful of snow and started to toss it around.
“He’s just full of surprises.” Nami thought. “It’s a wonder how a guy can have split personalities. He’s too narrow-minded.” She threw the snow in her hand. She didn’t mean for it to hit Hawk, but it did. Hawk wiped the snow off of his face and stormed towards Nami. She stood up and ran as fast as she could behind the school, hoping he hadn’t noticed who threw the snowball.
“I hope you feel extremely sorry about this.” Hawk had found her. The snow on the ground was hard, but Hawk picked up two fistfuls of snow and started to make a snowball. Without warning, he threw it.
Nami had barely enough time to duck. As soon as she stood up, Hawk threw another snowball, which hit her on the shoulder. Soon after that one, another hit her on the stomach, then on the head. Nami walked over to him and raised a fist to punch him, but he caught it just in time. He curled his free hand into a fist and tried to punch her, but Nami grabbed his wrist. The force pushed her down to the ground. Nami and Hawk rolled out from behind the school. Neither of then seemed to be giving up. Soon, a crowd formed around them, and Scott, James, and Hawk’s fan club pulled the two off of each other. Scott seemed to have Nami in a headlock with her arms behind her back, while James had pinned Hawk against the ground, immobilizing him. The group of girls shoved James off of him and pulled Hawk to his feet.
“She didn’t dirty your clothes, did she?” “What happened?” “What did she do to you?”
Nami, on the other hand, was having trouble being restrained.
“Let go of me!”
“Come on already, I don’t have all day, and my arms are getting tired out because you keep on wriggling!” Scott yelled.
“I gotta give him a piece of my mind!”
“You’re not giving him anything!”
Nami pulled free of their grip and made a beeline for Hawk. The bell rang, and Nami eventually let go of Hawk’s collar and walked toward the school doors.
Nami didn’t get any happier in the hallway. She decided to go into an empty classroom and use the pendant to get out of the school. All the stress from fighting had to be released somehow.
She slipped into the science lab when no one was looking and pulled out the pendant.
“Heck, since no one knows who I am, could get away with this junk for a long time. Well, at least until they figure out my identity.” Nami said to herself. She threw the pendant in the air, and in no time, she was able to fly. Nami walked towards an open window and breathed in the fresh air. One of her wings hit a small glass phial, which spilled onto the window. Unfortunately, that was a tube full of acid, which immediately burned through the metal hinges, causing the window to fall and hit Nami’s wing. There was a crack, and the glass on the window fell to the ground and smashed into bits. A large piece of glass hit her ankle, and then the frame hit her on the neck, knocking the air out of her. She fell to the ground unconscious. Hawk was outside the science lab. He had remembered that he left one of his textbooks in one of the cabinets. He heard a creak, then something smashing, and a thud. Hawk yanked open the door.
