“Daniel?” I call as I walk through the forest in my long skirts. “Where are you?” I step through more trees and look around at where I am; I have never gone this far into the forest before, and Daniel never goes this far without dad, but dad died a few days ago and Daniel is always somewhere away from all the other kids.
I have five sisters and three brothers and they are all missing! Daniel and I usually go out into the forest together and the others always go somewhere else in a huge group, never leaving each other. My mother is looking for them right now, she thinks they are over by the lake. I walk faster through the forest calling my brothers name as I do so. I am going faster for two reasons; one, that I am sort of cold and it is starting to snow; two, that I have to go home and tell my husband, Gabriel, something, but my mother will kill me if I don’t find my little brother first.
Suddenly, I hear music, it carefully flows through the forest seeming as though it is playing just for me, I decide to follow the beautiful sound. My thoughts of the cold, Gabriel, my mother, and my brother disappear as the music gets louder. A bird flies to my shoulder and sits there as I continue to walk. I look at it and ask it; “Can you hear the music too?” It looks into my eyes but doesn’t answer my question. I stop and take the bird off my shoulder and onto my hand so I can see it better. The feathers are all white its eyes are a frightening electric blue, I frown as it flies away from my hand to a tree behind me, for some reason I think it wants me to follow it, but the music has a greater influence on my mind and I turn around and start walking in the direction that it is coming from again.
The music is getting fainter and I start running, hoping that somehow I can catch it. The music disappears and I lean against a tree to take a breath. I look around and see that there is a clearing behind me. I step into it while looking up at the bright moon. When I look down, all my forgotten thoughts come flooding back to me. My eyes fill with tears as I look at the blank moonlit faces of all my brothers and sisters. They are all lying on the ground, their eyes closed, the beautiful eyes that will never open again. For all of them are dead.
I sink to the ground next to my little brother Daniel, who I had been looking for when I first went into the forest. I hear a beautiful sound that must have been made by a bird, when I look up to see where it had come from, I see the white bird that had been sitting on my shoulder.
“You knew this would happen didn’t you?” I ask it sadly. The bird looks at something behind me, then back at me, and then it flies away into the darkness of the forest.
A twig cracks somewhere behind me, and then, before I can get up and turn around, I hear a voice saying; “Now it is your turn!”
I stand as quickly as I can and turn to face the creature who had killed my brothers and sisters. It’s long light brown hair looked darker while she was in the shadow of the trees her blue eyes were glowing in the darkness. She stepped into the light of the moon, and I recognized her instantly.
“Mother? You did this? How could you do such a thing?” My mother laughed and glared at me as though she couldn’t believe I was so stupid.
“How could I do this? How could I not do this? Someday you will thank me for what I am doing! At midnight they will all wake and be creatures of the night!”
“What? What are you talking about? They are all dead!” I back away slightly, but I don’t get very far as I trip over my twin sisters cold unmoving body. My mother moves so quickly and carefully over to me that it seems as though she isn’t real, her long dark blue dress flows over the dead bodies as she steps over the three in her way, and kneels down next to me in less then one second.
“I am a vampire, and you and your sisters and brothers will all be vampires too, once I turn you,” I shake my head and try to back away from her hand as it reaches over and strokes my face, it is so cold against my hot face, I quickly lean back to get out of reach . I push her hand away as I try to stand and back up more.
She stands and takes a step back giving me room and time to back away, “Come to me my child, I need to change you before midnight or you will die slowly and painfully.” I shake my head and take another step back.
“I don’t want to be an evil creature! I don’t want to be like you!” she takes a step forward and laughs again. One more step and she her body is two inches from mine, her hands wrap around my waist pulling me closer to her, the two inches disappear as my body is drawn to hers. I can’t get out, I try hitting her, clawing at her with my nails, I even make her bleed by doing this but she doesn’t care. She just carefully turns my head to expose my neck an bends over me, her lips briefly touching my neck a little under my ear.
“You don’t have a choice.” Her long canines bite down into my throat and she slowly starts sucking the blood out of my body. I feel as though she is sucking out my soul, and soon I lose feeling in my fingers and my toes. I try to get away from her; I continue to dig my nails into her, I try to kick her but it is getting harder because I am losing the feeling in my legs. My heart is beating slower, but I barely notice for my mind can‘t concentrate on anything but my loud uneven breathing. I can no longer move my legs or my arms. I am pretty sure my fingers are still a centimeter in her skin, but I can’t tell and she isn’t doing anything about it. Everything around me is getting darker, the moon above me is getting fuzzy, and it is the last thing I see before I am surrounded by darkness for the first time.
